Google Penguin Effects on my Adult Site
Webmaster Blog

stats of an adult site

This small niche directory was hit by Penguin update. Traffic fell on April 23rd, 2012 and remained depressed.

Google's new algorithm update Penguin has hit a lot of adult webmasters. Some of their pages were hit badly, while others saw no effect at all. Last days I was analyzing weblogs of my own sites and found one site that was hit by Penguin. That's from a list of 50 sites on my first server that I looked at. That's not bad at all. Traffic dropped from 1300 to 750 hits a day. It's a very stable site that mostly relies on search engine traffic. It is online since 2003 and I don't spend more than 3 hours a year of work on this site (yes, you read this right. It is a site concept that is easy to maintain).

My site can be best described as a regional niche sex directory. Site owners and adult webmasters submit their sex resources with title and descriptions. I publish submissions when they place a reciprocal link back to my site on theirs. It's the same concept so many other small directories utilize and very similar to TGP site concept.

Here is why I would say Penguin effected my sex site:

First: Submissions with title and descriptions are not unique. This means, most submitters will submit exactly same titles and descriptions to other directories.
Second: Descriptions are rather short, something like 2 sentences and may look spammy as they contain a lot of keywords and sales pitch.
Third: Submitters mostly link back to me from link pages where my recip is posted together with many other links. There is no other content on those link pages of any value to readers. I almost never get any traffic from those sites, either.

Reasons and fixes for Penguin effect:

First of all: descriptions of sites listed in my directory are not unique and too short. I will need to rewrite those descriptions and extend their content from let's say 2 sentences to 5 sentences. Further I will add 1 or 2 relevant articles to each category that will describe historic, scientific or social aspects of this category in academic language terms, possibly add relevant media and resource links.
Second, I will no longer request a reciprocal link from my submitters. They are free to do so, but it will not be required. If they link to me they will need to link back to me from a popular position or another site. If they want to appear in a good position, they will need to buy a creative service from me. I will no longer accept low quality sites.

As you see, my fight against Penguin involves resources and a bit of work. I don't see a quick fix. Probably, it will involve 60 hours of work and 200 Dollars of investment into article writing. My yearly maintenance time will probably move from 3 hours to 12. Roughly, I will need to invest 60 hours of work at 25$ each = 1500$ plus 200$ articles = 1,700$ total. That's about a third of annual revenue shortfall that I am expecting from current drop in site revenue. An investment that makes sense, but it will take 2 or 3 months to see results on my webstats.

I will keep you posted in a couple of weeks and let you know about my little fight with Google's Penguin.

What if a beaten site is not profitable?

I could imagine other sites that would not have justified my action as outlined above. In such a case I would redirect pages from effected domain to another relevant site of mine and let the site slip into domain expiry. RIP.

Oh, here is a funny read. Indian link builders demonstrate against Google as Penguin update is feared to cause mass unemployment:
